Mana Hotel
Wood, cobogó screens and a reflecting pool a few metres from the sea
The Mana Hotel sits on Cumbuco beach, in Ceará, Brazil, and is built in wood, straw, terracotta and exposed concrete. The architecture is made of textured surfaces, and it is on them that the lighting works.
The light almost never appears as a fixture. It comes recessed in the slatted ceiling, close to the floor or from within the architecture itself, and what you see is the lit cobogó wall, the reflecting pool outlined in light and the coconut grove behind.
Common areas and landscape
- Grazing light on the cobogó walls and the bamboo panels, which passes through the openwork and turns the screen into a drawing.
- Continuous linear light recessed into the edge of the reflecting pool, following the curved walkway to the entrance.
- Discreet downlights in the slatted timber ceiling, with a narrow beam over counters, tables and reception.
- In-ground floodlights on the trees and coconut palms, and pool lighting calibrated not to glare for anyone on the deck.
Rooms and spa
- In the rooms, indirect light around the ceiling perimeter and at the headboard, with the white walls doing the rest.
- Independent reading light on each side of the bed, with no need for the general scene.
- In the spa and at the outdoor treatment beds, a low level, light from below and no source visible to anyone lying down.
