Indirect light in contemporary tropical architecture

At Casa Ilhabela, indirect light, bounced off the sloping planes of the ceiling, mimics the way natural light enters the house and creates a welcoming atmosphere, preserving the continuity between the interior and the landscape.

Lighting concept

The core strategy is indirect linear light, recessed into ceiling coves and between the exposed rafters. All lighting is dimmable, which allows intensity to be modulated precisely and scenes to be programmed for each time of day and each atmosphere, without glare. The light enhances the natural materials of the house: wood, white-painted ceilings and woven textures.

Spaces

Interiors: soft light washes walls and ceilings, highlights the architectural structure and brings warmth and intimacy to the rooms.
Circulation and bedrooms: light guides movement discreetly and gives continuity between spaces.
Exterior: the approach becomes more scenic, with light recessed into the pool deck and railings, creating delicate reflections in dialogue with the horizon and the water.

Efficiency and maintenance

Dimming lets the light run at different intensities according to use, which reduces consumption at off-peak times. The system is modular and easy to maintain, and the infrastructure allows replacement and upgrades without structural work, in line with the principles of refitting and the circular economy.
